When my mother was pregnant with me, my father smoked. As a result, I was born with developmental disorders that have caused me great pain all my life. As I grew up, non-smokers had absolutely no rights at all. We were exposed to second-hand smoke at home, work, and in public.

Now that non-smokers do have rights, smokers complain that they have no rights. Unfortunately, smokers are drug addicts. They don't care about others. They throw their cigarette butts all over the ground, they smoke in no smoking areas, and yes, they still are responsible for many fires that kill people.

Personally, I don't care if smokers want to commit suicide, but don't expose me to your second-hand smoke.

I am so tired of hearing about how HARD smokers have it. For crying out loud, it's not impossible to quit smoking. Sorry but I have to confess that I am judgmental as I live above a smoking couple who insist on smoking on their balcony every 25 to 35 minutes around the clock (I do get a break between midnight and 5:30 a.m.) I do judge their behaviour because it so totally affects my mental, physical and emotional health. The strata council has declared he and she are within their rights even though I argued that their habit is a nuisance and prevents me from the peaceful enjoyment of my home (standard bylaws).

I don't feel one bit sorry for smokers anymore. I got up one morning several years ago and said Today is The Day and I never looked back. Someone else's addiction should not be MY problem and second hand smoke is MY problem.

Smoking should be banned in MUDs and I will take up the cause if enough people are interested. It's time that non smokers exercise their right to clean(er) air and living around smokers is a death trap.

Most people agree that to quit smoking is really difficult. It takes a lot of determination and great will power to stop you from lighting that next cigarette. Nicotine cravings, irritation and inability to concentrate are the withdrawal symptoms related to quit smoking.

Mychoice gets no credibility from the media because they are nothing more than a front for Big Tobacco, so now they are going to pretend they are no longer funded by tobacco companies. Why do you think that letter appeared on their website?

So now they will follow the model employed by Big Tobacco shills around the world. Set up a website where you advance all the usual tobacco industry arguments and rhetoric, include a link to a PayPal account, and wait for those anonymous "donations" to roll in. You see this all over the internet now, it's become a sort of cottage industry.
http://www.geocities.com/corporate_opposition

And while we're on the subject of "mychoice" -- tobacco is considered one of the most addictive products on earth, 9 out of 10 smokers start as children or teenagers, and tobacco companies are known to spike nicotine levels in cigarettes to make them more addictive so kids get hooked faster. In what sense, then, does this represent a "choice"?

Nicotine is the biggest killer of smokers and non smokers, to advocate its addiction to nicotine is typical of addicted persons to their drug of choice. Making it worse is that its legal which puts a smoke screen over the fact of what it is. To bad for all you smokers that think positively about it. Hope you all quit on your own and not because your bad health forced you to.

Great words Shiela! I wish there were 'smoking' and 'non-smoking' buildings, so at least the smokers could smoke in peace, and the non-smokers could breathe - easily and freely. I am so tired of being forced to breathe the chainsmoking neighbor's smoke any time I try to open my window. Isn't it funny it was written into my lease that it is a non-smoking building, yet it's ok with the landlord if she chainsmokes on the balcony under mine

How cute this article is, but in reality you smokers expose others to poison, and I wonder how you would feel if I blew poison gas in your daughter's face, when she is an innocent child with Asthma.
Smokers are self-centered, I wish you could just get your fix in the veins and that way your choice to destroy your body would not hurt children or adults. I have a neighbour who smokes like a chimney, her smoke drifts into my home and my daughter breaks out into asthma attacks, but hey, she had the right to smoke in her apartment, right?

I am sorry people are addicted to poison, but is it fair that others have to be subjected to it?

You tell me...
